I have to agree. Most people consider Rectory Lane to be the boarder. It is interesting to note that Loughton Town Council's offices are on the Debden side of that boarder!

I lived in Loughton from 1948 to 1974. In Barfields Gardens in one of the first houses built by the LCC after the war. We considered ourselves to live in Loughton, not out of any snobbery thing but simply because the rest of Debden, the rest of the LCC housing, was built a little later. We considered Rectory Lane to be the dividing line between Loughton proper and Loughton/Debden. BTW I played in the Broadway when it was a building site.
